There are contributions from artists such as fashion designers Bas Kosters,
Daryl van Wouw and Marlies Dekkers. Graphic artists like Ottograph, Out of Order
and Kingchuub. And even contributions from music band members of Moke and Voicst.

The Cure for Greed

Whatever we feel about greed, we can agree on one thing: it exists.
Whether there’s too much of it in the world, or too little, is a matter of opinion,
not understanding. We all have strong feelings one way or the other.
On one side of the debate, some believe it’s the root of all that is corrupt and evil.
Conversely, greed is seen and often celebrated as the key behavior that allowed
our species to adapt and evolve so successfully.

But what exactly is greed? Is it an immutable algorithm hardwired in our DNA,
a survival instinct that triggers responses to a constantly changing environment
that can turn hostile at any moment?
Maybe greed is an emotional reaction to our cultural reward system?
Or the embodiment of the darkest side of our natures, rooted in fear?
When you get down to it, you realize how little we really know about 'greed'.

‘The Cure For Greed’ is an iconic object that sparks an internal and social dialogue
on all aspects of ‘greed’, the benefits as well as dangers of this basic and pervasive
human behavior. It’s an invitation to reexamine our assumptions and inject them with
the type of energy that will ensure new and evolving perspectives.
Our hope is to learn from this process, and grow, to become more human, not by
repressing our nature, but by transcending it with understanding and compassion.

Making of 'The Cure for Greed'
A behind the scenes peek, excerpted over the four-month process to produce ‘The Cure for Greed’.
Intricate mechanical and chemical separation is needed to extract and recover pigment from US currency.
The ink is then re-stabilized, divided into individual doses and packaged into medical vials.

About the object
The personally monogrammed custom-made mahogany or walnut box contains:
- One 24-karat gold plated syringe.
- One 5ml crimp-sealed serum vial containing one dose of stabilized pure dollar ink
mechanically and chemically recovered from approximately $10,000 in US currency.
- Two 24-karat gold plated needles.

We use technology to feed our insatiable curiosity for translating the unknown
into the symbols and syntax of our known world. Simultaneously, technology
feeds and enables both this curiosity and our need for translation.
However where there is translation, there is bound to be noise.

Despite the implications of the term, all noise is not created equal.
Whether audio or visual, some noise is qualitatively different,
more stimulating than others. And yet we treat it all with the same disdain.
Like an abnormality. A distortion. An error to be avoided, ashamed of and erased.
If, on the other hand, we could let go of our arbitrary values,
we might glimpse for a moment, perhaps even decipher,
the aesthetics of the so-called ‘error’.

Experimental data suggests that human vision is not quite
as straightforward as school curricula would like us to believe.
The image at the back of our retinas is not a faithful reflection of
the object in front of it. Instead, what we actually see is an interference pattern.
A composite of present external reality and our stored visual memories.
A simultaneous distortion of encoded intent and decoded content.
Of subject and object. More holographic than photographic.

Everything is an interference pattern, a distortion.

It’s just a question of which distortions we are comfortable with.
Exposure to new sights on the peripheries of perception will stretch our senses,
and open up new playgrounds for unleashing our curiosity.
Who knows what patterns we’ll find in the chaos, once we meaningfully start
looking for them. Maybe all we need to do is open our eyes.
And look at things long enough for them to blur out of focus,
and reveal what is otherwise concealed beneath the pixilated surface.

After birth, the second biggest event in life is death. And, yet, across cultures,
our relationship with it seems based on avoidance and denial.
We asked ourselves, why isn’t death treated as naturally and gracefully as birth?
Why can’t we perceive it in a more positive way? And redesign its rituals to reveal,
rather than conceal, who we really are? That’s how Project Womb was born.

I believe the only true legacy anybody leaves behind is the story of his or
her life. Usually, the telling of this story is left to friends and family.
The more celebrated ones amongst us are at the mercy of media.
That’s a lot of different versions of our life story.
And we don’t have a say in any one of them. Until now.

The Womb provides the comfort of knowing that your story is told
in your own words, pictures and videos. And shared with the world.
It’s a container for impressions and memories you can record and update
over your lifetime. A collection of personal insights and experiences that
can inspire future generations for many years to come.

I want to change how the story is told. And how it’s presented.
I find rectangular caskets unnatural and unfriendly.
To me, the womb offers a design that’s in harmony with life and nature.

In essence, The Womb is a media-driven time capsule
that makes sure your life story lives on.

Diddo is an artist and designer whose work spans the spectrum from
engaging conceptual art to intriguing product design.

To date, Diddo’s conceptual art projects have appeared in many publications around the world,
such as Wired, Financial Times, Vogue, Suddeutsche Zeitung, Rolling Stone, Business Week, Juxtapoz and Playboy.
Along the way, he has aroused the curiosity of creators and tastemakers, receiving requests
from the likes of Sasha Baron Cohen, Kanye West and Lady Gaga.

After a distinguished career in marketing-centered design, Diddo redirected his focus
to conceptual art. His work in marketing gives him an intimate knowledge of the tools
and techniques corporations employ to feed their self-serving ideas.
The experience has left him exceptionally armed to create challenging concepts and
place them in our heads.

Diddo’s goal however, is not to feed us ideas; instead he focuses on re-contextualizing
the ideas already there. His works don’t feed us a political agenda, or a carefully curated
viewpoint, but rather reawaken the essential debates we tend to neglect.

Diddo finds inspiration in examining the space between what we think and what we allow others
to think for us. His work is an attempt to define the border between perception and reality,
and the process, which turns image into icon.

In ‘Designer Gasmasks’ for example, Diddo orchestrates the shotgun marriage between
the Military Industrial Complex, and the farcical self-centrism of high fashion.
“Gasmasks plucks the strings of the satirically subversive; prodding the basest motivators
in all of us, and artfully allowing us to simultaneously feel both disgust and material yearning.”
He shows us things we don’t want to want, but we do.

Like much of Diddo’s work, ‘The Womb’ presents itself as an intriguing product.
It’s real power, however, lies beneath the surface, in the questions it raises, and thoughts it provokes.
Where do we start from and where do we end up? Or do we?
‘The Womb’ inspires us to investigate which side of this divide we call home.
Our lives send out ripples of influence like stones dropped in still ponds.
‘The Womb’ records these impressions and preserves them for future generations.

Diddo was born on the luckiest day since the sixth century (7-7-’77).
He studied Media Design at the School of Arts Utrecht, NL and acquired a Masters Degree
in European Media Design from the University of Portsmouth, UK in 2001.

Frank Gehry participated in a pitch for the design of a new integrated resort on Sentosa Island,
Singapore. He created an enormous organic structure consisting of several domains.
The resort was to host a huge Atlantis themed museum, botanical gardens,
water parks, health spas, hotels, casinos, etc.
Together with Chris Pacetti, in service of the Arnell Group New York,
I worked on the Aquabrid concept for the Museum.

To make the museum richer, we hatched the idea of letting visitors interact with evolution
and create their own characters. Along theway visitors have the opportunity to alter,
generate, mix and duplicate new water-based species, a.k.a. Aquabrids.

I worked on the media concept, character research, development visualization.
Next to that I created proposals for the architectural projections.
The Aquabrids concept won the Silver International Design Excellence Award (IDEA)
and was featured in Business Week.

Wetsuits are both functional and protective, but why must they all look the same?
Is there some unwritten law that dictates we shed our individuality to blend into
the monotone waters?

With that in mind, I took up the challenge to create an alternative.
With custom inks and unique printing techniques, i'm able to map textures
onto the suits to create original designs. The first edition contains four designs:
a rusted iron diving suit evoking the days of Jules Verne, the anatomic musculature
suit as a homage to the human body, a wet suit which gives the illusion
that the wearer has been attacked by a group of hungry sharks,
and finally a whale shark patterned suit that celebrates the brilliance
and originality of our natural water world.
